Are you beating yourself up or moving yourself forward?

I had a conversation with a woman this morning that reminded me why I started this blog in the first place.  She was struggling because she is working hard to lose weight and get healthy and she is seeing results but a bit slower than she would like.  She was frustrated because the devil in her one shoulder was muffling the angel on the other.  She was allowing her inner voice to tell her, “you can’t” and “just give up” and “I am not good enough” and “I am not doing enough” and “I will never see results”

Sound familiar?  Well, it certainly did to me.  I have been there many, many times.  So here are some tricks that I have learned along the way that help me and I hope will help her and you.

1. Have an attitude of gratitude: Keep a gratitude journal.  I know you have heard this a million times before, but there is a reason you have… IT WORKS.  I write down 10 things I am grateful for every morning and review the list each night.  I swear it changes your outlook and attitude throughout the day.

2. My version of the Golden Rule: Treat yourself the way you treat others.  STOP GIVING YOURSELF THE SHORT END OF THE STICK.  Be proud of yourself and praise the things you like about yourself.  OK.. this is going to sound corny.. but I literally stand in front of the mirror every morning and say OUT LOUD 5 things I am proud of about myself or about something I have done.  Some people might prefer to write the 5 things in a notebook and that’s ok too.. I just find that it is something extra powerful in saying the words and hearing the words.

3. Stop beating yourself up and move yourself forward.  Make a concerted effort to write down and work toward your goals every day.  There is an amazing sense of accomplishment and self- esteem that comes with knowing you are proactively making your life into what you want it to be and not just letting life happen to you! There are great books, audiobooks and podcasts on this topic from inspiring folks like Brian Tracy, Jim Rohn and Bob Burg.

4. Just commit to small steps every day.  Don’t set your expectations of yourself so high that you can’t possibly meet them.. you are just setting yourself up for failure.  Instead, set yourself up for success.

I hope some of this resonates with you and helps someone out there today.

Have a great day and enjoy all of your small steps…
